Panel to Support the Santa Marta Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels Conference” hosted by CAN EUROPE
Building a shared roadmap for a just transition away from fossil fuels.
Ahead of the Santa Marta conference, CAN Europe organised discussions with the Colombian government, EU institutions, labour organisations, and civil society at the European Parliament to explore pathways toward a coordinated and equitable transition away from fossil fuels.
In the face of escalating violence and geopolitical tensions causing devastating human loss, peace must be prioritised - but this is also a critical moment to bring forward concrete solutions that advance fossil fuel phase-out while addressing economic, social, and governance challenges.
Hosted by MEPs Annalisa Corrado, Kai Tegethoff and Martin Gunther, the event made it clear: the EU needs to be more than a spectator - it must turn this moment into real momentum by setting a clear fossil fuel phase-out framework.
Powering Ethiopia's Green Future: Shaping a Just Energy Transition Narrative hosted by Eco-Justice Ethiopia and Consortium for Climate Change Ethiopia
Eco-Justice Ethiopia, in partnership with the Consortium for Climate Change Ethiopia (CCC-E) for Climate Change Ethiopia, successfully hosted a national civil society consultation workshop in Addis Ababa under the theme, "Powering Ethiopia's Green Future: Shaping a Just Energy Transition Narrative." Ethiopia faces severe macroeconomic pressure, spending nearly $5 billion annually on fossil fuel imports. The workshop featured presentations from leading sector experts and scholars.
These expert presentations were followed by a highly active and interactive discussion session, where civil society representatives, scholars, and youth raised pertinent questions and forwarded strong comments regarding a just energy transition. Participants discussed the need for heightened commitment from both the government and the public to leverage Ethiopia's renewable energy potential and shift from costly fossil fuel dependency toward clean domestic energy and e-mobility. Furthermore, participants emphatically demanded that the financial support provided by the international community for this transition must be in the form of fair grants and reparations, rather than loans that worsen Ethiopia’s debt burden.
